BJJ Starter Pack

28th June 2025 by FlowArtes

One Day or Day One?

At Checkmat Flowartes, we want you to know that you are capable and we are here to support your growth as a martial artist and as a person.

We came up with a format to kickstart your BJJ journey in a safe environment catered to your pace while nudging you to jump in and start rolling with the community. Before jumping into group sessions, one-on-one private sessions lay the groundwork for foundational movement patterns and understanding of the game. Sometimes, the basics can be tedious and might mean progressing a little slower at the start. However, we believe this is a small trade-off to longevity in your martial arts life and we have seen this with all our students who have come through our door.

Our objective with this starter pack is to give the absolute beginner a solid introduction and set you up for success for the rest of your BJJ journey, regardless of where you roll.

If “showing up is half the battle,” let us be your partner for the other half!

Foundation First

  • Understand your body better while establishing fundamental psychomotor coordination skills
  • Develop core movement patterns needed for any roll
  • Perform basic Guard and Passing techniques
  • Prepare yourself mentally to roll with others
  • Familarise yourself with the IBJFF point system
  • Gain an overview of the history of BJJ as a sport and Checkmat as a team
Our lineage

Flowartes Checkmat is proud to be an official Checkmat affiliate under Professor Leke, with supervision by Mestre Ricardo Vieira.

Our lineage: Mitsuyo Maeda > Carlos Gracie > Helio Gracie > Rolls Gracie > Romero Cavalcanti > Ricardo Vieira > Alexsandro Machado

Personalised Approach

  • Drills and coaching tailored to your existing capacity and needs
  • Encouraging environment on and off the mat

Getting Started

OPTION A: Lock In – 2 Privates + 4 Class Pack – $300

OPTION B: Buddy Up – 2 Semi-Privates + 4 Class Pack each – $500

Note: 4 Class Package has a 1 month validity, commencing from day after the 2nd scheduled Private Session. Credits can be used for any class on the public schedule.

Capoeira Flowartes announces Vadeando 2023: Nossas Raizes

16th July 2023 by FlowArtes

Capoeira Flowartes is excited to announce that our next Batizado & Troca de Corda gathering, Vadeando 2023: Nossas Raizes, will take place Aug 25-27, 2023. In this edition, we hold the intention of rooting back into that which calls us back to the pé do berimbau. We will be joined by two special guests, Mestre Marcelo Finco (N’golo la Muanda) and Shirley Serafim (Independent Samba Dance Artist), at our humble casa here on King Georges Avenue, Singapore.

Credit: Vadeando 2023 main graphic is designed by Aluna Faísca

To the capoeira community, Mestre Marcelo needs little introduction and his voice probably seems familiar to many of us who hunt for capoeira training tracks on Youtube. We are very fortunate to be joined by such a force in Capoeira, bringing with him decades of knowledge and experience in this martial art form. Through his musicality and community focus, Mestre Marcelo brings people together in a positive environment while honouring the legacy of his Mestre Ananias. It has been a while since Mestre has been in the region and we hope you will join us in giving him a warm welcome back to Singapore!

Shirely Serafim has been living in Singapore for over 14 years; she has been helping to spread the Brazilian culture through dance, showing some Samba movements and telling a bit of its history. Shirley will be bringing us Samba de Roda workshops over the course of Vadeando 2023! Samba de Roda is an integral part of Brazilian culture, born in the Recôncavo Baiano. The rhythms, the lyrics, the style of dancing and even the instruments that accompany the melody can vary by region. The style gets its name because the musicians form a circle (“roda”) and one person at a time dances inside it; it is also a tradition where everyone is invited to dance and sing. A familiar scene at the Samba de Roda at the end of a Capoeira Roda is where one or two persons (typically “male” and “female”) dance in the center of the roda; a new dancer to the center is exchanged with the umbigada.

We will also be hosting a DIY Pandeiro-making workshop where everyone will get to build their own pandeiro and bring it home! We’ve been busy prototyping a few models and we believe we’ve got one that will make you sound like a professional Capoerista (materials included, but playing skills not).

Vadeando 2023 promises to be a rich platter of movement, music, dance, and crafts. In addition, we also look forward to introducing our new members into the community with this Batizado and recognize the efforts and commitment through our Troca de Corda ceremony. Please come celebrate with us!

RESERVE YOUR SPACE

Please email us at info@flowartes.com or Whatsapp 90088175 to make payment. Please note that our studio has limited capacity, so advanced registration is welcome.

ABOUT MARCELO FINCO

To the capoeira community, Mestre Marcelo needs little introduction and his voice probably seems familiar to many of us who hunt for capoeira training tracks on Youtube. Beyond informal tapings, he has also released two albums: Vadiando No Vale Dos Orixas and most recently, a live album with Mestre Pernalonga from the 2022 5th Capoeira Angola Meeting in Athens.

Through his musicality and community focus, Mestre Marcelo aims to bring people together in a positive environment while honouring the legacy of his Mestre Ananias. He has also launched online courses with the purpose of encouraging the musical development and journey of every Capoerista while remembering that capoeira music is a collective process.

Mestre Marcelo founded the group “N’golo Ia Muanda” in 2003.

ABOUT SHIRLEY SERAFIM

Living in Singapore for over 14 years, Shirley is an active member of the Brazilian Community in Singapore. She has been participating and collaborating in events with the Brazilian Community and local institutions, such as MediaCorp, People’s Association, Singapore Airlines, Bloco Singapura, and others, helping to spread the Brazilian culture through dance, showing some Samba movements and telling a bit of its history.

Why martial arts for your child?

23rd April 2023 by FlowArtes

O QUE AS ARTES MARCIAIS PODEM DESENVOLVER NO MEU FILHO? At Flowartes we are proud and lucky to watch kids grow up over the years in the studio and we wanted to highlight some areas in which we’ve observed in all the youth who have come through.

MOTOR COORDINATION

Through kicking, striking, jumping, and directional changes involved in martial arts, kids develop a keener sense of motor control, cognition, balance, and proprioception from a young age.

FOCUS

Learning movements and techniques takes practice, repetition, and perseverance. Young people learn to channel their energy and direct their attention to the present moment, towards acquiring new skills; this boosts their ability to follow through with an action or routine.

SELF-ESTEEM & CONFIDENCE

Competence breeds confidence. As your child progresses and achieves new techniques, this affirms their capabilities and potential to grow. Martial arts practice emphasizes personal development and celebrates achievement at your own pace. Affording your child the space and time to develop their identity in an embodied way brings about a sense of autonomy and trust in themselves.

In addition, when a child realizes that achieving one’s martial arts goals depends on their own commitment and effort, it promotes self-reliance and independence.

STRENGTH & FITNESS

By attending martial arts practice regularly, kids will build their endurance, power, reflexes, agility, flexibility, mobility, and strength. In our increasingly digitized way of living, it can be easy to forget that physical activity is essential for children. The practice of martial arts from an early age encourages an active lifestyle and the discipline to maintain their abilities.

STRUCTURE

Through a task-oriented training structure and shared code of conduct, martial arts practice helps to establish models of consistency and ways of navigating the world.

Part of martial arts practice is focusing on a goal, systematically breaking it down into smaller parts, and taking steps to reach that goal. This transfers over into real-world goal setting and perseverance: the more you see your efforts pay off, the more likely they will persevere through hardship or delay gratification in different contexts.

STREET & SOCIAL AWARENESS

The practical applications of martial arts inherently require kids (and adults!) to pay attention to their surrounding environment and social context. In interacting with others and learning about real-life situations, this can help kids discern between safety and danger. At the same time, it’s not just about fight or flight: they learn how to resolve conflicts, be emotionally intelligent, make new friends, and show compassion.

Are there other benefits you might add to the list? How else have you seen martial arts impact kids?

Tucum & Baiana Santos featured in Choke, Clinch, Crank, Combat

23rd March 2023 by FlowArtes

“Community, Camaraderie, Compassion, Courage. These are not the first words that come to mind when we think about fighting. But beneath the blood, sweat and tears are the stories of community and camaraderie— the friendships that gets fighters through the gruelling training it takes to become great, the immense compassion and courage it takes to come back after a loss. These are the stories we do not hear. This is why we fight.

There is currently no other book like this in Singapore. The story of our local combat scene is one that has never been shared but one we believe must be heard by a larger community. While this is a book about combat sport, it is also a book about the resilience of Singaporeans, the strength of community, and a part of the wider story of what it means to live in Singapore.”

Estamos honrados em fazer parte deste livro maravilhado e de está ao meio de bons profissionais das Artes Marciais em Singapura!

Choke, Clinch, Crank Combat is a coffee table book published last year (2022) celebrating the voices of our local combat community in Singapore. In conjunction with the launch of the book, Flowartes hosted a women’s self-defense workshop series in July 2022 and we were also glad to have professional boxers Amanda and Samantha share their story in our humble studio.

Here we are in November at the book launch event with founder of CCCC Andrea (center), Professor Leke (also featured in the book), and CCCC team member Ben.

This weekend, you can also catch Tucum and Baiana this Saturday, 25 March 2023, 2pm – 4pm @ Gifted Fight Academy as part of Sing Lit Shuttle. There will be a 1hr discussion panel, a half hour combat demonstration and a book signing. Entry is free and we hope to see some friendly faces there!

You can purchase a copy of the book at the studio, directly with CCCC, or at any of the other featured gyms!
