Capoeira Flowartes is excited to announce that our next Batizado & Troca de Corda gathering, Vadeando 2023: Nossas Raizes, will take place Aug 25-27, 2023. In this edition, we hold the intention of rooting back into that which calls us back to the pé do berimbau. We will be joined by two special guests, Mestre Marcelo Finco (N’golo la Muanda) and Shirley Serafim (Independent Samba Dance Artist), at our humble casa here on King Georges Avenue, Singapore.
To the capoeira community, Mestre Marcelo needs little introduction and his voice probably seems familiar to many of us who hunt for capoeira training tracks on Youtube. We are very fortunate to be joined by such a force in Capoeira, bringing with him decades of knowledge and experience in this martial art form. Through his musicality and community focus, Mestre Marcelo brings people together in a positive environment while honouring the legacy of his Mestre Ananias. It has been a while since Mestre has been in the region and we hope you will join us in giving him a warm welcome back to Singapore!
Shirely Serafim has been living in Singapore for over 14 years; she has been helping to spread the Brazilian culture through dance, showing some Samba movements and telling a bit of its history. Shirley will be bringing us Samba de Roda workshops over the course of Vadeando 2023! Samba de Roda is an integral part of Brazilian culture, born in the Recôncavo Baiano. The rhythms, the lyrics, the style of dancing and even the instruments that accompany the melody can vary by region. The style gets its name because the musicians form a circle (“roda”) and one person at a time dances inside it; it is also a tradition where everyone is invited to dance and sing. A familiar scene at the Samba de Roda at the end of a Capoeira Roda is where one or two persons (typically “male” and “female”) dance in the center of the roda; a new dancer to the center is exchanged with the umbigada.
We will also be hosting a DIY Pandeiro-making workshop where everyone will get to build their own pandeiro and bring it home! We’ve been busy prototyping a few models and we believe we’ve got one that will make you sound like a professional Capoerista (materials included, but playing skills not).
Vadeando 2023 promises to be a rich platter of movement, music, dance, and crafts. In addition, we also look forward to introducing our new members into the community with this Batizado and recognize the efforts and commitment through our Troca de Corda ceremony. Please come celebrate with us!
